WHY HAVE WE REACHED A TURNING POINT?

Prof. Andrea Furlan

SUMMIT LEAN AND AGILE 2022 - Tuesday, Oct. 11 Florence, Italy

Abstract

Lean is necessary because it aims forexcellence in existing processes and paves the way for the development of agile innovation management systems. This requires building ambidextrous organizations, that is, organizations that are able, within the same context, to pursue incremental improvements and manage discontinuous innovations.

Following Kotter (2016), we need dual operating systems: enterprises that are able to adopt and manage opposing organizational logics (hierarchy and network), not through structural separation (some functions deal with efficiency, while others deal with innovation), but through the generation of contexts that develop ambidextrous people. Managing the paradox between improving the existing and exploring the new requires new organizational structures and management models.
